Riot in Rio

It's a riot of colour wherever you look.

The twinkling lights of favelas arriving from the airport at night like piles of gemstones spilling off the hills around Rio on the way into town.

Here the trees are wise, with beards. Rio is the largest urban forest in the world!

The architecture is a riot as well - colonial, modernist, brutalist, improvised.

I only got the tail end of our trip to remarkable Rio, a steep price to pay for lingering on the Swiss slopes in a snowstorm.

Nothing in my cinematic or literary exposure to Rio or Brazil - Orfeo Negro, City of God, OSS117 - prepared me for such a rich kaleidoscope.
